Chapter 3 recap
Reviews and safety
The key takeaways from this chapter’s 2 lessons.
Design reviews in the model
- Every review has a purpose (fire, access, maintenance, cost) and invites the people who can judge it.
- Comments become issues: a viewpoint in the model, an owner, a due date, a status.
- BCF carries issues between software, so comments stay attached to the place in the model.
- An issue is closed when the next model shows the fix, not when someone says it's done.
Designing out hazards
- The order is always: eliminate, then reduce, then inform. A note on a drawing is the last resort, not the first.
- The model shows hazards drawings hide: work at height, plant access, heavy lifts, confined spaces.
- Record residual risks against the elements they belong to, so they reach the contractor and the operator.
- In the UK, CDM 2015 makes this a legal duty for designers; most countries have a similar rule.
