Level of information need (LOIN)

The ISO way of saying how much information each deliverable needs: geometry, data and documents described separately, for a purpose and a milestone.
Updated 5 November 2026Draft · awaiting review

The level of information need (LOIN) describes how much information a deliverable must contain, and no more. It starts from a purpose (for example spatial coordination, cost planning or handover) and a milestone, then states three things separately: the geometry needed (detail, dimensionality, location, appearance), the alphanumerical data (properties and their values) and the documents to link.

It is defined in ISO 7817-1 (which replaced EN 17412-1) and is the term ISO 19650 uses. Projects that also use the LOD scale often keep both; see LOD vs LOIN for how they differ.
