Type and instance

The two levels at which elements carry information: the shared definition (type) and the individual placed element (instance or occurrence).
Updated 5 November 2026Draft · awaiting review

Most authoring tools and IFC separate a type — the shared definition, such as a door type D01 with its size and fire rating — from each instance or occurrence placed in the model, with its own location and mark.

Information shared by all instances belongs on the type, so it is entered once and stays consistent. Information unique to each placed element, such as its room or serial number, belongs on the instance.
