BIM object

A reusable model component, such as a manufacturer’s product or a generic element, with geometry and information.
Updated 5 November 2026Draft · awaiting review

A BIM object is a reusable component for authoring tools: a door, a light fitting, a pump. It combines geometry at a suitable level of detail with properties. Revit calls them families; other tools use libraries or catalogues.

Manufacturer objects carry product data but are often too detailed for design stages. Projects usually set rules for object quality, naming and which properties every object must have.
