Shared parameter

A project-defined parameter with a fixed identity that can be used across many families, models and schedules.

A shared parameter (a Revit term; other tools have equivalents) is a parameter defined once in an external file with a fixed identifier, then added to families and projects. Because its identity is fixed, schedules, tags and exports recognise it everywhere it appears.

Projects use a shared parameter file to make sure every team captures the same information, such as asset tags or classification codes, under the same name and data type.
