openBIM

An approach to BIM based on open, vendor-neutral standards such as IFC, BCF, IDS and bSDD.
Updated 5 November 2026Draft · awaiting review

openBIM is an approach promoted by buildingSMART International in which project information is exchanged using open standards — IFC for models, BCF for issues, IDS for requirements, bSDD for definitions — rather than depending on one vendor's formats.

It lets teams choose their own tools and gives clients long-term access to their information. It does not exclude native formats; it means the shared and archived record is open.
